About the Maritime Library

The Maritime Library is a project born out of a passion for the sea and a commitment to preserving its rich history. Our mission is to provide a centralised, accessible, and interactive platform for maritime enthusiasts, researchers, educators and anyone with an interest in maritime heritage.

Led by a diverse team of professionals, this project brings together Dr Ayse Atauz Phaneuf, President of ProMare and a distinguished maritime archaeologist; Adela Hawley, Director of ProMare and an expert in heritage curation, conservation, digital accessibility and public engagement; and Charlotte Ashcroft-Booth, fellow Director of ProMare and a visual marketer specialising in digital outreach and engagement. The project aims to make maritime collections accessible online, attract a global audience and increase both visits and volunteer involvement at Plymouth’s heritage sites.

Why an Online Archive?

In an era where digital access is paramount, the Maritime Library aims to bring historical resources directly to you, wherever you are. By digitising and curating these invaluable resources, we ensure they are preserved for future generations and accessible to anyone with an internet connection.

The Maritime Library was fortunate to have a stand at the Social Isolation and Loneliness Forum, 2024.

‘Bringing Plymouth together to find solutions to isolation and loneliness.’
