Devonport Plaque
This painted wooden plaque features a carved naval crown at the top, with the word ‘DEVONPORT’ inscribed below. The central circular section displays two golden dolphins flanking a golden anchor on a white background, with a blue section beneath showing a golden boat. The gold, white, and blue paint highlights the city’s maritime heritage and draws attention to the intricate carving.
The dolphins and anchor are traditional symbols of the Royal Navy, often associated with the Submarine Service, while the boat likely represents the vessels connected to Devonport’s long-standing naval base. Together, these elements reflect the city’s vital role in Britain’s naval history and its ongoing connection to the Royal Navy.
Objects like this were crafted to celebrate and commemorate naval institutions, and painted plaques such as this one helped make the symbolism accessible and visually striking.
